SUMMARY:Special Book Event: A Whole Life in Twelve Movies
DESCRIPTION:An evening with Irish storyteller\, Gareth Higgins\nWednesday\, March 5th\nDoors open at 6pm\, presentation starts at 6:30pm\nLove books AND movies? Join us on Wednesday\, March 5th at the Roadhouse as we welcome back our favorite Irish storyteller and peace activist\, Gareth Higgins\, to talk about his new book collaboration\, A Whole Life in Twelve Movies: A Cinematic Journey to a Deeper Spirituality. \nCo-written with American poet and author Kathleen Norris\, this book captivates readers as they discuss acclaimed movies that can help us better understand our lives–from before birth to death and beyond. Featuring 12 films\, including 2001: A Space Odyssey\, Malcolm X\, and Babette’s Feast\, this book is perfect for individuals or groups to watch and discuss movies over the course of a year. Each chapter recommends additional films and includes discussion questions ideally suited for spiritual gatherings\, small groups\, and book clubs. \n\nAs readers watch and read\, they will journey through the human life cycle and explore themes of existence\, goodness\, belonging\, vocation\, identity\, success\, generosity\, dealing with conflict\, and what it means to be human. The book outlines a cinematic path toward a deeper spirituality and a more meaningful life for people across the faith spectrum and seekers alike. James Martin\, SJ\, American Jesuit priest\, writer\, and editor-at-large of America magazine\, has written the foreword and says this: \n\n“Reading this beautiful book is like having an endlessly fascinating conversation with two friends about film\, when those two friends are always wise\, thoughtful\, and funny and have inspiring things to say about the movies they love. . . . For me\, the first thing I want to do after watching a powerful film is see what others have to say about it. At heart\, it’s a desire for conversation\, for learning\, and for being challenged. This book is an answer to those common desires.”\n\nJoin us for a conversation about this unique literary and cinematic adventure – and the power of storytelling to change our lives – with Gareth in person at the Roadhouse! We will provide the theater snacks\, along with copies of the book for purchase and autograph! \nMore about Gareth Higgins\nGareth Higgins was born in Belfast in 1975\, grew up during the Northern Ireland Troubles\, and now splits his time between his homeland and his new home in North Carolina. He writes and speaks about the power of storytelling to shape our lives and world\, peace and making justice\, and how to take life seriously without believing your own propaganda. He has been involved in peace-building and violence reduction in Northern Ireland and helping to address the legacy of conflict. He received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s University Belfast and helped teach the world’s first graduate course in Reconciliation Studies at Trinity College Dublin. He also helped found the Wild Goose\, New Story\, and Movies & Meaning festivals. Gareth leads retreats in North America and Ireland and founded The Porch Magazine. \nMENU\n-Popcorn (GF\, V)\nWith Vermont Creamery cultured butter\n-Zingerman’s Bakehouse Pretzels (V)\nWith beer cheese\n-Pigs in Biscuits
